Council tax is the most common reason a household ends up dealing with bailiffs, so it's worth being crystal clear on one point: for council tax, an enforcement agent cannot force entry into your home. Knowing that single fact takes a lot of the fear out of the letter on your doormat.

- Enforcement follows a liability order and a Notice of Enforcement with 7 clear days' warning.

How council tax enforcement works
If you fall behind, the council applies to the magistrates for a liability order, which lets it pass the debt to an enforcement firm. Can they force entry?
No. For council tax specifically, a bailiff may only enter peacefully — through a door you open — and you're generally not obliged to let them in. How to stop it
Contact the council early about a payment arrangement, check whether you qualify for Council Tax Support or a discount, and if council tax is part of a wider problem consider a formal solution.
