Things to know about IVAs

An IVA is a formal insolvency procedure. It must be approved by your creditors, stays on your credit file for six years, fees are taken from your payments, and debts are only written off if you complete it. It isn’t right for everyone.

Read the key risks
  • Creditors must approve it. An IVA only goes ahead if creditors holding at least 75% of the debt that is voted agree. Your proposal can be rejected.
  • Credit file and public register. An IVA stays on your credit file for six years from the start date and is listed on the public Individual Insolvency Register while it runs. Getting credit will be harder.
  • Spending restrictions and annual reviews. You live on an agreed budget for the length of the IVA (usually 5–6 years). Your income and spending are reviewed each year, and your payment can go up.
  • Fees. Fees are taken from your monthly payments, so less of what you pay reaches your creditors. How IVA fees work.
  • Your home. Under the current IVA Protocol, your home isn’t included in the IVA and you won’t be asked to remortgage. If your share of the equity is £10,000 or more, the IVA usually lasts six years instead of five.
  • If it fails. If you can’t keep up payments the IVA may fail, you would owe the remaining debt again, and the supervisor may petition for your bankruptcy.
  • Write-off only on completion. Remaining qualifying unsecured debts are only written off if the IVA is completed successfully. Secured debts, court fines, child maintenance, student loans and some other debts can’t be included.
  • Other options may suit you better. A debt management plan, DRO or bankruptcy may be more suitable. IVAs are available in England, Wales and Northern Ireland only; different solutions apply in Scotland.

About the data

  • The figures are new IVAs registered with the Insolvency Service in England and Wales. They don't include IVAs in Northern Ireland or trust deeds in Scotland.
  • Firms are named if they're responsible for at least 1% of IVAs registered in the past three months, or 1% of all ongoing IVAs. Smaller firms are grouped as "other firms".1
  • Each IVA is counted against the firm recorded when the data was extracted. Where IVAs have moved between firms, the move isn't always reflected, so historic figures for some firms can change between releases.1
  • The annual IVA outcomes and providers release uses the same source and may show slightly different figures for some firms because it was extracted at a different date.2
  • How many IVAs a firm sets up says nothing about the quality of its service. See our guide on how to choose an IVA company.

Common questions

Which company does the most IVAs?

In 2025, The Insolvency Group registered the most new IVAs in England and Wales (14,213, 19.8% of all new IVAs), followed by My Debt Plan (5,471) and PayPlan Partnership (5,150). In the first 9 months of 2026 the largest was The Insolvency Group (8,634). Source: Insolvency Service.

How many IVAs are set up each month?

8,224 new IVAs were registered in England and Wales in September 2026. Over the 12 months from October 2025 to September 2026 there were 82,219, an average of about 6,852 a month. Source: Insolvency Service.

How many IVA companies are there?

The Insolvency Service names 30 firms in its latest figures, because each handles at least 1% of recent or ongoing IVAs; 29 of them registered new IVAs in the 12 months to September 2026. Many smaller firms are grouped together as 'other'. The largest five firms registered 46% of new IVAs in 2025, down from 71% in 2016.

Is the IVA market becoming less concentrated?

Yes. The five largest firms registered 71% of new IVAs in 2016 and 46% in 2025. Creditfix, the largest firm every year from 2016 to 2023, registered 26,604 IVAs in 2018 and 3,740 in 2025.

Where do these IVA company figures come from?

They come from the Insolvency Service's official monthly individual insolvency statistics (Table 7b), which record the firm responsible for each new IVA registered in England and Wales. Firms are recorded as at the date the data was extracted, so IVAs transferred between firms may not always be reflected.
